Intellijel’s Ambient Modular Patch: Morphing Textures with Atlantix, Metropolix & Co.

Intellijel’s latest YouTube walkthrough is a deep dive into the possibilities of an ambient modular patch. With a rig centred around the Atlantix and Metropolix, the video explores how to wring evolving textures and lush soundscapes from a carefully constructed signal chain. There’s a strong focus on distributing pitch, gates and CV using Shifty, creative sequencing via Metropolix’s mod lanes, and layering in live grains and momentary effects for subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) sonic movement. If your modular leanings edge toward the atmospheric, this one’s a masterclass in patch choreography.

Building the Ambient Backbone

The video kicks off with a relaxed introduction to the patch’s signal chain: Atlantix runs into Multigrain, which heads through Sealegs and Swells before hitting the system’s output. The host quickly sets Multigrain to dry through, giving a clean listen to the unadorned core tones before the full ambient wash is unleashed. While it’d be tempting to simply sequence Atlantix with a single Metropolix track, Intellijel’s approach is more modular—literally—cycling through different waveform outputs and shaping them individually with Quadrax before they hit the effects.

Each Atlantix waveform—sine, spike, pulse, triangle—is routed to its own channel in the Amps module, then summed and sent through the Atlantix filter for additional flavour. Pitch and gate duties are distributed cleverly: Metropolix’s tracks control oscillator pitches independently, ensuring moments of both harmonic overlap and separation. Gates are dispatched via the Shifty module, which hands off control to Quadrax envelopes for nuanced amplitude shaping. The result is a patch with both tonal and dynamic variety at its heart.

the idea here is that we have track one and track two controlling the pitch of oscillator A and oscillator B so that we get moments where…

Round Robins and Mod Lanes: Sequencing Evolved

It's sounding a lot more ambient already.

A highlight of this setup is the ‘Round Robin’ distribution using Shifty. Gates from Metropolix’s track one are sent to Shifty, which sequentially triggers Quadrax envelopes, each mapped to an Amps channel. This not only cycles through the four waveform outputs but also allows modulation of each voice’s envelope shape, making the patch feel genuinely alive and evolving.

The video also delves into Metropolix’s mod lanes, using recent firmware features like mod gates to trigger the Atlantix envelope independently. By tweaking track lengths, offsets, and divisions, the patch’s rhythmic DNA becomes more organic. The host demonstrates dividing track speeds by odd numbers, injecting subtle cross-rhythms and keeping the harmonic texture from ever getting stale. It’s a sequencer nerd’s playground, and the video makes no secret of how much variety a few clicks and cables can unlock.

Creative Workflows: CV Distribution & Live Grains

Modulation is at the heart of the evolving textures here. A Dixie in LFO mode feeds the CV input of Shifty, which, thanks to its track-and-hold nature, freezes modulation values as it cycles through outputs. This lets each part of the patch receive its own evolving flavour, from subtle wavefolding tweaks to filter modulation and even index modulation on Atlantix. Noise as a modulator adds a slightly broken, organic edge to the sound.

Things get more granular—literally—when Multigrain is brought in for live sampling and playback. The host demonstrates capturing and randomising multiple live sounds, then cycling through them using mod lanes and manual patching. Each grain’s parameters are tweaked independently, and global edits are made using latch functions. The patcher’s philosophy comes through clearly: keep things moving, keep them unpredictable, and sculpt each layer until it fits just right in the swirling mix.

now we're getting some funky modulation making Atlantic sounds slightly broken which I quite like.

Performance Tools: Effects, Randomness and Ambient Drama

we'll just stick with reverse for now. So alt to exit, and now we can see when we're reversed.

No ambient patch is complete without a few wildcards. Enter Tangrams, with its pulser circuit providing slow, shapeable envelopes distributed to various modulation targets. The video spends time assigning and tweaking these, using Quadratt and Quadrax as modulation routers, and experimenting with rise, fall and timing to let textures breathe.

Randomness is sprinkled in using Noise Tools for slow, slewed voltages, which are patched to modulate both sound sources and effect parameters. The final flourish is performance FX: Swells is triggered to flip into reverse mode via mod lanes, while Freeze on Sealegs is introduced for momentary, glitchy hold effects. Each is mapped to a gate toggle and triggered slowly for maximum impact—ensuring the patch continually morphs, shimmers and occasionally veers into massive, atmospheric territory. The overall effect is a masterclass in patching for movement, with every module pulling its weight in the ambient ensemble.
