The bass had been gathering dust for Verysickbeats lately. For his video released on November 3, 2026, featuring the SP-202 and SP-404MKII, he picks it up again and samples three notes. Another episode of his "Use What You Have" series: using what's available instead of planning the next purchase. The real live benefit, however, only emerges afterwards—when the beat is running and his hands are free to shape its sound.
Four Bars, Then It's Time to Tweak

“Now, the good thing about this is now that it's in pattern mode, I can use the effects as this is playing. See, I can't do that if I'm in looper mode. So that's why I decided to use pattern mode.”

The guitar samples are on the SP-202, the drums on the MKII. Sequencing is done on the MKII, whose pads trigger the SP-202 samples via MIDI. Verysickbeats also demonstrates the slightly twisted mapping of pad rows between the devices. Four bars form the basic structure; for another take, he later tries quantizing to sixteenth-note triplets.
But for the subsequent performance, something else is more important to him than the grid: he wants to select pads and shape their sound without interrupting playback. He explicitly discards the looper in favor of pattern mode for this process.
The Bass Doesn't Have to Join In
At first, Verysickbeats announces he'll filter selected pads including the bass. Then he changes his mind. It's precisely this little reversal that makes the experiment interesting: just because you can process everything doesn't mean you have to. Not every filter sweep needs to take the foundation along.
Already in his Kev Brown-inspired video from September 17, 2026, he works with such separation. There, an MPC-2000XL sequences the sounds of the SP-404MKII. He deliberately keeps the bassline sparse; when it comes to effect processing, he doesn't assign the bass to any bus, while the drums run on a different bus than the other sounds. In the new duo, the MKII now takes over sequencing. The musical question remains: what is allowed to change, what should remain the anchor?

“I'll leave the bass alone.”

First a Pattern, Then the Next Step

“And it turns out that's quite a bit easier to work with, at least if you're like me and used to like a pattern-based gadget workflow.”

How much the order of steps matters is shown by Gabe Miller Music in "First Day with the SP-404 MKII" from November 29, 2022. He leaves the rough patches of his first attempts in: tempo settings, sample ends, and a pattern whose loop doesn't work cleanly. Instead of a confident demonstration, he offers a relatable learning process.
After a firmware update, Miller uses chromatic and polyphonic recordings in the sequencer and puts the familiar pattern-building at the start. Only when he's happy with the result does he move on to resampling. For him, this makes the SP more manageable—not because all quirks disappear, but because he first finds a familiar approach.
Playing Is Not the Same as Committing
In his workflow at the time, Miller distinguishes between a pattern that plays with effects enabled and a newly recorded sample that contains this processing. When resampling, he captures the processed sound on a pad; afterwards, he can turn the effects off because they're already recorded.
That doesn't make the recording the end point: Miller pitches down resampled material in vinyl mode and continues to process it. The previously recorded effect layer then becomes part of the audio material. For performance, this contains a practical decision: which sound movement should already be prepared, and which should only emerge under your hands?

“The thing to keep in mind is that effects don't live in patterns. They can either be toggled on or off and that's it. And so if you want to like bake an effect into your pattern, you need to resample.”

Verysickbeats doesn't have to reinvent his beat every time. The pattern takes care of repetition; he decides which sounds are allowed to move. Playback thus becomes a performance with musical priorities. And sometimes, the best intervention is simply to leave the bass alone.
