How many synthesizers are in a single lead melody? In his video published on October 30, 2026, about John Carpenter’s horror soundtracks, Tonepusher investigates the instruments behind the film music. He describes Carpenter’s scores as a major influence on his own music and sound design. His retrospective becomes especially interesting where several devices merge into a single sonic idea: in the lead from Halloween II.
A Studio Inventory Is Not Yet a Soundtrack

“Of course, having these instruments in the studio doesn't mean they were all used on Halloween.”

Tonepusher first puts the brakes on a popular form of synthesizer archaeology: you can’t reconstruct a recording from an old equipment list alone. For 1978’s Halloween, he refers to Dan Wyman’s statements about the large Moog modular system. He then cites a studio inventory from that time, which also includes a Sequential Prophet and a Yamaha CS-80, among others. His crucial caveat follows immediately:
A Melody Gets Company
For Halloween II, however, Tonepusher describes a specific combination. The video names a Prophet-5 Rev 3, a Prophet-10, and various ARP instruments as part of Howarth’s setup. But for the lead, it’s not just about the equipment: citing Howarth, Tonepusher explains how the two Prophets were layered and thickened with an additional ARP Quadra overdub.
This refers to combining the sounds of several instruments, not just adding more voices within a single synthesizer. According to this account, the extra ARP track is meant to make the sound even thicker. Here, more instruments take on the same melodic task, rather than necessarily adding more musical material.
Alongside this, another layer of studio technology is at work: Tonepusher describes two ARP Avatars on an ARP sequencer; a Linn LM-1 provides the master clock. The studio recollection quoted in the video explicitly mentions clock pulses with which the drum machine drives the sequencer. Lead layering and sequencing are thus different tasks: one thickens the melody, the other organizes the recurring figures in time. Here, the drum machine is interesting as a conductor, not as a drummer.

“the lead melody was created by layering the Prophet 5 and the Prophet 10 with an ARP quadra overdubbed to make the sound even thicker.”

A Prophet for Each Ear

“And it actually sounds a bit like the binaural effect you get on the Super 6, in that you've got the separate voices in the left and the right.”

How appealing two related but not identical sounds can be together is demonstrated by Starsky Carr in his 2023 Model 80 video. He puts the Prophet hardware in one ear and Softube’s software in the other. For him, this creates a spatial effect he compares to the Super 6.
Carr doesn’t hide the limitations of his setup: the knob mapping isn’t perfectly matched, and he notes differences in resonance. He also compares his Prophet-5 Rev 4 to software that, according to him, is modeled after the Rev 3. This is a hardware/software comparison, not a reconstruction of the Halloween lead. But the simultaneous playing makes it clear that sonic kinship and small differences can coexist.
Not All Voices Have to Take the Same Turn
Carr gets even more precise with the Model 80’s aging knob. He switches to unison to hear all five voices together. First, he describes an almost exact tuning. With the aging turned up, he then counts through the five voices individually and explains the differences in their envelope progression. In this demonstration, sonic density arises not just from the number of voices, but also from the fact that they don’t behave exactly the same.

“And that's a spread in the envelope itself. So that's the envelope on each of the voices being slightly different. I like that.”

Howarth’s layered lead and Carr’s voice experiments remain different approaches. Yet a musically appealing idea lies in both: not every additional layer has to bring a new idea. Sometimes its job is simply to make the same idea more compelling.
