DOOM OS on the SP-404: More Freedom, More Second-Guessing

Sunwarper is correcting notes in the piano roll—only to stumble upon an apparently accidental automation. He only manages to delete it after looking up how. In his video “So I Finally Tried DOOM OS on the SP404 MK2…”, published on November 7, 2026, he explores the unofficial expansion with the camera rolling. He wants to find out what fits into his SP workflow. The extra options immediately raise new questions.

One Less Detour to the Filter

At first, things really do move faster: Sunwarper builds a one-bar drum pattern, edits individual steps directly, and shifts the timing of his hi-hats. He already finds the drum workflow much quicker. But his real aha moment comes with the internal instruments.

On the poly synth, a filter is immediately available. Instead of having to resample a sound multiple times, he can shape it directly. That’s where he sees the real gain: not just more choices, but less busywork. When he moves on to the FM bass, the decision becomes musical—he deliberately makes it rougher so it’ll be audible even on a phone.

And Suddenly, Everything Is Up for Debate

He’s also impressed by the extra control during performance: he mutes tracks, fades in an instrument, and tweaks synth parameters live. He also demonstrates EQ editing in the mixer. For performances, he finds these interventions even more impressive than the graphical sequencer. Here, the expansion becomes a creative tool, not just a correction department.

By the end of his run-through, he’s definitely built a track. Still, the flip side preoccupies him: more screen focus, still plenty of button combos—and above all, the ability to constantly reopen decisions he’s already made. On the unexpanded SP, making a change was often simply too much effort. That helped him leave a sound as it was and move on. He explicitly describes his own workflow, not a general flaw of DOOM OS.

The SP That Ended Up in the Closet

But limitations don’t automatically help either. In “Best Gear for Beginner Beatmakers,” published December 12, 2023, Jon Makes Beats tells the story of buying his SP-404 in 2008. After a long build-up, he was disappointed after about an hour; the device then sat unused for about six months. Only when he let go of the expectation that the sampler would magically make him a good producer did he discover its constraints as a help for learning. This is a story about his SP back then, not about DOOM OS.

Learning Also Needs a Budget

Jon remains refreshingly unsentimental. Alongside interest and affordability, he sees the time you’re willing to invest in learning an instrument as crucial. That’s why he doesn’t generally recommend his beloved Octatrack for beginners. Enthusiasm for a tool and its suitability for someone else are, for him, two different things.

For sunwarper, the decision remains pleasantly flexible for now. With a press of Exit, he leaves DOOM OS; his pattern continues to play in the original system, including the synth sounds. Why their pads don’t light up in this first attempt, he can’t say. It’s an interesting demonstration of interplay, but not yet proof of full compatibility.

For now, sunwarper is leaving DOOM OS installed and wants to keep exploring. His curiosity outweighs his unease. It remains to be seen which freedoms he’ll make lasting use of—and which decisions he’ll still consciously lock in. After all, a good workflow doesn’t just save steps. It also lets you leave a sound as it is.
