Metamyther’s Modular Mayhem: Traffic & Vic-X Take the Fast Lane

Metamyther isn’t here to play it safe—this time, it’s all about sending the Jasmine & Olive Trees Traffic module headfirst into wild modular territory alongside not one, but two Vic-Xs. Expect percussive chaos, algorithmic weirdness, and proper CV abuse. If you think you know what Traffic does, think again. Ready for a modular joyride where rules are left at the door? Buckle up.

Traffic Unleashed: Percussion Without Borders

Metamyther doesn’t waste time—straight out the gate, we’re looking at the Jasmine & Olive Trees Traffic module, usually seen with Noise Engineering voices. But today, the script’s been shredded. Instead of the usual suspects, Traffic is thrown into the ring with two Vic-X modules, promising a different kind of modular fight night.

Traffic’s three CV outputs become the backbone for a bespoke drum kit, slinging triggers with the kind of versatility that makes most drum brains look lazy. If your idea of percussion is stuck in the ‘X0X’ world, this setup is a kick to the head. And we haven’t even got to the juicy bits yet.

You can set three different CV values that then go out based on your three triggers up front.

Double Vic-X: Algorithmic Anarchy

The Vic-X works particularly well as a percussion source.

Pairing Traffic with two Vic-X modules is like inviting two mad scientists to your rave bunker—they’re both unpredictable and they make each other weirder. Metamyther shows how Vic-X, often pigeonholed as a drone voice, becomes a junkyard percussion engine when poked right. The different algorithms hidden inside Vic-X serve up everything from metallic clangs to atonal mayhem.

It’s a reminder that your modular doesn’t need to be polite or tonal to get the crowd moving. Metamyther finds happy accidents all over the stereo field, serving up hi-hats that sound like broken glass and percussive shrapnel you can almost taste. If you think modular percussion is all about tip-tapping, think again—this is rhythm for the unhinged.

CV Modulation: The Secret Sauce

Here’s where the patch gets spicy. Metamyther leans hard into CV modulation, showing that static sounds are for synth cowards. The Traffic module’s three triggers fire off unique CV values, keeping the patch in a constant state of flux. Don’t just set and forget—twist those values and let your percussion mutate.

The boom kick drum gets extra wild thanks to Zadar modulating its length and colour. If you’re not abusing every input on your modules, what are you even doing? The result: kicks that squish, distort, and occasionally threaten your monitors. This is how you turn a modular patch into a living, breathing street weapon.

I'm willing to bet that a lot of people don't touch the CV inputs on the boom, but I mean, this is just such a great opportunity.

Patch Breakdown: Sequencers, Algorithms & Ratchets

Now for the nitty gritty: Metamyther breaks down the full patch, showing how the AuxiOne sequencer in stochastic mode feeds one Vic-X, locked to an Arabian scale for extra spice. If you thought this was just random noise, think again—there’s sneaky musicality lurking under all that grit. The Electus Versio adds a shimmer of reverb, making those atonal hits sound cavernous.

The boom kick is sequenced with simple triggers but gets ratcheted into oblivion by the iDOM and doubled up with an Incas, because one kick just isn’t enough. This isn’t about restraint—it’s about piling on the chaos until it grooves. Metamyther even squeezes in the Percons voice to lay down a hi-hat pattern that slices through the mix.

Most of the patch details fly by faster than a raver at 4am, and honestly, some things you just have to hear for yourself. The video’s where the real carnage lives—don’t expect a spreadsheet of CV values here. Go watch, listen, and let your own patching brain run wild.

Patch It Yourself—And Tell the World

Does that give you some novel ways of thinking about traffic, VicX, or both?

Metamyther wraps it up with a challenge: what mad combos can you come up with using Traffic and Vic-X? This isn’t a closed book—it’s an invitation to join the modular fight club. Share your own chaos in the comments and maybe inspire the next unhinged patch. Modular is for experimenters, and this jam is proof.
