Cyberdub Chaos: Blairy’s Beatlab and Roger Rastahman Mash Up Reggae and Cyberpunk

Strap in, mates—Blairy’s Beatlab is back with a wild ride through the sonic outback, where reggae grooves meet cyberpunk grit in a genre-bending Cyberdub jam. Old Uncle Blairy hands the reins to Roger Rastahman, who’s on a mission to fuse two worlds that rarely share a BBQ. With a shed full of synths, effects, and a DIY attitude, this video is a front-row seat to the kind of creative chaos that makes you want to spill your beer in excitement. If you’re keen on live jams, unexpected sound combos, and a workflow that’s as unpredictable as Melbourne weather, this one’s for you.

Cyberdub: Where Reggae Meets the Matrix

Roger Rastahman kicks things off at Blairy’s Beatlab with a bold plan: mash up cyberpunk and reggae into something he calls Cyberdub. It’s not just a theme for a comp—it’s a full-on experiment, like trying to cook a pavlova on a campfire. The idea? Take the deep, echo-laden vibes of dub reggae and inject them with a shot of futuristic, electronic grit.

He admits he’s made things tricky for himself, but that’s half the fun. Instead of picking one style, Roger dives into both, pulling elements from each to see what sticks. It’s a creative journey that’s all about risk-taking, and you can feel the excitement as he sets the stage for a session that promises to be as unpredictable as a kangaroo in a mosh pit.

I decided to make things hard for myself and mash those two things together to create Cyberdub.

Gear Galore: Synths, FX, and Dubby Delights

The 2600 I've been using as just like a dub effect box. Sounds awesome.

The video quickly turns into a hardware playground, with Roger showing off a tasty selection of gear. There’s an ARP 2600 pulling double duty as a dub effects box, and a classic Electro-Harmonix Stereo Memory Man dialled in for those long, trippy echoes that make dub what it is. If you’re into knob-twiddling and hands-on FX, this is pure eye candy.

Roger doesn’t just rely on the classics—he brings in FM synthesis for extra spice, and starts the beat-building process by hunting for the perfect drum break. The workflow is all about layering and tweaking, with each device adding its own flavour to the Cyberdub stew. It’s a DIY approach that’s messy, fun, and full of happy accidents—just the way we like it.

Layer Cake: Bass, Plucks, and Drums That Slap

Once the foundation’s set, Roger gets busy stacking sounds like a snag stack at a Bunnings sausage sizzle. He hunts down a plucky synth line on the Take 5, fiddling with envelopes until it’s got just the right snap. The bass is fat and round, holding everything together like duct tape on a festival tent.

The drums get a cyberpunk makeover, with driving kicks and snares layered over the original break. There’s even an arpeggiator thrown in for good measure, plus a healthy dose of delay to keep things swirling. By the time he pinches some vocals from another track and drops in a lead, the whole thing’s sounding like a late-night warehouse rave with palm trees out front. The layering process is hands-on and spontaneous—if you want to see every tweak and twist, you’ll have to watch the video for the full ride.

Boundaries? Nah, Just Jam It Out

Roger reckons the real magic happens when you stop overthinking and just jam. With all the parts programmed in, he sets a few boundaries and lets loose, seeing where the groove takes him. It’s a reminder that sometimes the best moments come from letting go and trusting your instincts—no need to stress about perfection when you’re having a blast.

Once you have all the elements programmed in and set up then you literally just jam it out.

The Big Reveal: Cyberdub in Full Flight

The final stretch is a full-on performance, showing how all the layers come together in real time. The track evolves with each pass, morphing from deep dub grooves to glitchy, cyberpunk textures. It’s a sonic journey that’s equal parts chill and chaotic, with enough twists to keep you guessing.

If you want to hear how the Cyberdub beast really roars—or just see a hardware jam that’s as raw and real as a backyard shed session—this is where the magic happens. No spoilers here: the only way to catch every detail is to watch Blairy’s Beatlab in action. Grab a cold one and enjoy the ride.
